Munchen

Hello again from Germany! This time we are in Munich, or as some German friends we made last night call this part, Bavaria! Before we give you the details on Munich, we have to let you in on our last night in Berlin.

It was literally maybe the most amazing night yet, we are still trying to convince ourselves it was not a dream. A Berliner we met in a Trattoria gave us the recommendation of a nice place for a cocktail called Solar. She gave us the underground station to get off at and told us it was on the 16th floor of a building, but no more information. After walking around in heels and doubting a building of that size existed in the area, we see to the left down an alley and behind another building, a red glowing elevator shooting up the side of a building. So, we make our way down the alley to a black door that reads "Solar" and "this door will be opened for you." We decided they examined us from the inside and decided we were cute enough to be let in, so the door opened. As we stepped into the door, a bouncer looked at us as if we were supposed to present him a secret password, then smiled and showed us where the elevator was. We then rode up the glowing red elevator that hoisted us up above the entire city. The walls were all glass giving a panoramic view of the city. Needless to say we spent the night sipping yummy cocktails and mingling with Berlin's most chic on swinging plush benches watching fireworks off in the distance. national geographic.

After such an amazing last night in Berlin, Munich had a hard act to follow. Still, we like the hostel again. We were offered a free breakfast for being a "double wombatter." The set up is almost exactly the same as Berlin, yet we are in the center of the city action right next to the big central station. Today, we made the journey 40 minutes outside of the city to Dachau to visit Germany's first concentration camp which all other concentration camps were modeled. The experience was so powerful it is almost silencing. Two of the barracks and the crematorium still stand as a memorial to the 30,000 people who were prisoners and died there. We also viewed a documentary in the Museum on the background leading up to the creation of the camp, the details of daily life and final freedom after the 13 years the camp was active. It was a somber but important day to experience. After spending so much time enjoying Germany, it was important to take in that part of their history.

Happy Fathers Day!

We miss you all. Thanks for following us around. We'll meet you in Switzerland in a few days. Love, Hall and Liz

  2. Sounds like an awesome time in Berlin. Hearing about your adventures puts a smile on my face! Sounds like you are having the time of your life....and that was the plan.

Really had a great Father's Day with the trip to Brownsville with Lane and Rufuss. Mom sends her love and of course we are all missing Babe. Got home in time to run in the heat while Keith threw the javelin. Then a great dinner at Richland with Keith, Lane and Riley. Your stories from Berlin made them more excited than ever about their trip coming up in a couple of weeks.

I can't believe I missed your call but it was GREAT to hear your voices over the many miles. I had just read your card from Giverny and will take you up on your recommendation, next time in Paris. Keep the post coming and thanks for all of your Father's Day wishes! Love, Dad

  3. Hello angels,
I've been out of the loop for a week in Boone but just read all your posts. Solar sounds like it was inner galactic super(nova). That was great advice yall recieved. I'm so envious that you visited Monet's garden. Total dreamland. Susan, D, and me have been spending lots of time together (at your house...by the pool...with milo and zoe) its pretty fabulous. Your mom and peter have been so sweet to us. We love it over there, but miss you SO much. Living at your house part time is keeping us close though. Can't wait for your next post. I give you hugs through ze computer.

  4. Hey beautiful women, my dad's house worked out and I moved in with him on Saturday night. Thanks a bunch for everything. One more week in Nashville, living it up, just went to the dentist haha. I am over at Susan's and we are jealous about Solar. I love you so so so so much. I just got some pictures printed from us dressed up as Lucille and Betty and from the Of Montreal concert. I hope you are always joyous, grateful, youthful and free-spirited you deserve to be carefree. You both are wonderful, sending you my love.Dee

  6. Hall and Lizard! It seems as though you're having a great time with indescribably amazing experiences, yet you do such an eloquent job of doing so...the concentration camps; what an experience.
I'm absolutely elated you both saw suki and kelley in amsterdam! Crazy how small the world really is, huh? I received your postcard, Hall, on Sunday from the Heiniken brewery; It made my day- knowing I have such a great friend no matter how far. :) The mentioning of the coffee shops also brought a smile...
I miss my ladies. I'm so happy for you as well knowing you'll carry these experiences for the rest of your time. Hope the Bavarians treated you well! haha. My dad says hello! (he just walked in the room haha). Can't wait to see pictures and all. Until then...well I don't need to tell y'all to have a good time because I can tell you're already having a blast! xoxo

  7. Hey Hall and Liz! My mom, Martha and I just got back from dinner at your mom and Peter's. We'll have to do it again when y'all are back in the USA! I've been trying to keep up with your blogs and it sounds like you all are having a wonderful time in Europe. I'm so jealous of you and especially that you were just in Munich. It was one of my favorite cities I visited in Europe and I hope it treated you guys well too. Nashville has been very hot the past few days (well into the 90s). I hope you've found some cooler temperatures across the pond. Anyways, keep updating us... I'm living vicariously through your adventures!

    Safe travels!
    Love,
    Julia
