Santorini Defines Paradise

Greetings from Greece. After a long 12 hour airport ordeal, we finally made it to the island of Santorini. Luckily, our hotel had a ride waiting for us at the airport and we had a midnight viewing of the Island. Santorini is shaped like a horse shoe that wraps around the actual mouth of the volcano . We are staying in the small town of Perissa, on the main island (not the volcano), which is known for it's black volcanic lava rock beaches. The strangest part is when you climb into the ocean, instead of your feet sinking into the sand, you are slipping and sliding around on a giant mossy rock. The past 3 days have been spent laying on the beach and eating amazing greek food.

Yesterday, we rented an ATV (4wheeler), which is pretty much the most common way to get around the island. We wanted a motor bike scooter, but after we saw the narrow roads that wind around cliffs, we were glad to be on 4 wheels. In the morning, we drove a couple km over to the red beach, which is a red volcanic rock beach with a huge red cliff in the background. We had to hike a ways through dessert like terrain in order to get to the beach. We decided we will not be cut out for a dessert. It was so hot, we spent most of the time floating in the cool water and searching for rocks. Then we headed out to the light house, with amazing cliffs that drop hundreds of feet into the blue water and a great view of the volcano. We stopped and ate lunch at a little restraunt extending over one of the cliffs. National Geographic.

We then drove to the island's capital, Fira. We spent some time exploring the gift and jewlrey shops before racing the sun out to the town of Oia to catch the sunset into the sea. Today, we sadly had to return the ATV, but we spent the whole day laying out on Perissa's black beach until the sun set. Tomorrow morning, we are catching a ferry to Athens for the last 3 nights of our trip. This entire thing has been so unbelievable, it is even harder to accept that we are coming home to Nashville on Friday! We can't believe that it's already been almost 2 months... but then when we start to think back about all that we've done, it's fairly obvious we have acomplished a lot of ground!

We'll see you soon! Love, Hall and Liz

  1. Hey girls, how is that every place you go is more special than the last? Greece sounds amazing and you know how much we would enjoy the beaches. Well, we had a great day in Copenhagen and thought of you guys. We saw the little mermaid statue, yes sir the one that Disney copied and made into your favorite movie (at one time). We became like the locals and rented bikes to explore the city. The harbor and waterfront are amazing, as well as all the cobblestone streets. Along the way we also discovered Carlsburg beer, the local's favorite. They know how to make a margarita for Keith, but it is not their specialty. We also visited the Danish Design Center and learned a lot about the Danish heritage of innovative and cool lighting design. You know how much we like modern. It has been a great day exploring the city. I also got my bike reassembled and went for a run. Keith is heading out to the track tomorrow to check out his venue for the week. He throws the hammer on Wednesday and the javeline on Thursday. I compete on Saturday. Wish we were going to be there to greet you in Nashville. Hopefully you will have a chance to chill with Julie, Lane and Rufuss before we return. Enjoy your last nights in Athens. Love, Dad and Keith

  2. Hall and Liz---
It is hard to believe that you all have been gone over 7 weeks. I know it is bitter sweet but lots of people and dogs miss you and are ready to see you. So I guess you all want to go to the usual spot for dinner Friday night after we pick you up at the airport. Picked up the car with a new bumper and rear side panel. I feel like the car has been in and out of shops all summer but should be ready for the chapter. See you very soon and have fun these last few days.
    Love and miss you,
    Kim, Peter, Milo and Zoe
